Kintsugi

  • Small Works Gallery 10-12 Commercial Road Murwillumbah, NSW, 2484 Australia (map)

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of golden joinery or repair traditionally used to mend ceramics. Rather than discarding or trying to hide cracks and breaks with an invisible seam, this ancient technique highlights imperfections with golden joinery, creating something rarer and more beautiful than the original artefact. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise or discard. It reminds us that the broken parts of ourselves are an important part of our history. “The wound is the place where the light enters you”. Rumi
