A common thread

  • Mist Gallery 1B/51 Tweed Coast Road, Cabarita Beach NSW 2488 (map)

I am delighted to be one of the selected artists for the Mist Gallery An Artist a Week program, beginning on 1 June, 2023. My exhibition, A Common Thread will be on from the 10-16 of August.
The exhibition is inspired by the Indigenous wisdom in Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass, where she writes so beautifully about the common thread of healthy, mutually beneficial relationships that supports all life on earth. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting.”

Everything on earth plays a role in protecting and preserving life on our planet, from forests to oceans, invertebrates to apex predators. Like dropping a stitch, removing one species of plant or animal can have dire effects on a series of inter-reliant relationships, causing entire ecosystems to collapse.

To save our planet, and ourselves in the process, we desperately need to restore the balance of give and take, to share our gifts with nature, as she so generously shares hers with us.

The vibrant colours and textures woven into the fabric of these multilayered pieces will showcase an idealised, healthy relationship between nature and humanity. The collection illustrates how lush and rich this co-creation can be, as well as highlighting the importance of our kinship and connection with nature as the common thread that is pivotal to her survival, as well as our own.
